State Refund?

Just a quick note regarding law changes that took place this summer: Minnesota conformed to certain Federal stimulus changes such as the tax exclusion for the first $10,200 in Unemployment in 2020 as well as tax free loan forgiveness from PPP and other SBA programs. This LATE adoption by MN means that many many people are owed additional refunds (basically anyone who filed before July 2021 and had any add-backs on Form M1NC).

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET ADDITIONAL REFUNDS?
Minnesota Revenue is still working on sending out automatic refunds if/when possible. For most people, you'll just want to wait and watch for a refund via either check or direct deposit. Keep record of anything received and give it to your tax preparer this upcoming tax season!

WHAT IF I GOT A LETTER FROM MN REVENUE RECENTLY?
The state is also sending letters to those who have more complicated items that can't be automatically fixed. If you recently have (or soon do) receive a letter saying that you may be affected by recent law changes, please upload a copy to our Online Portal and we'll help you file an amended return to get the additional refund!

WHAT IF I HAVEN'T GOTTEN A REFUND OR A LETTER?
If your MN tax return had a Form M1NC (with anything filled out other than the charitable contribution line), there's a good chance that there were changes applicable to you, so watch for a letter or a refund over the next 30 days. If nothing arrives by late October, please contact us and we'll review your file to see if we should amend at that time.
