TAX PLANNING TIME!

We hope your holiday season is starting out right! At Fox Tax, this time of year is also known as Tax Planning season, an opportunity to unwrap your presents (tax bill) early without the guilt or regret (and see if that ugly sweater can be returned). We would love to discuss your specific situation and advise on some year end planning tips.

Had an exceptionally good (financial) year?
Send us paystubs and/or an estimate of business income/expenses and we can see if there is anything we can do before year end to lower your taxes. We could also discuss whether you should consider a different business entity for next year.

Had an unusually low earning year?
It could be a good time to convert some pre-tax retirement savings to Roth (post-tax) while the stock market is down and your income is in a lower tax bracket than usual. Contact us if you want help determining if and how much to convert.

Email your Fox Tax Accountant
Send us an email with an update on your 2022 income/expenses and we can help you set up a time to review and discuss any year end tax savings opportunities.

Note: Our standard consulting rate of $80/hour will apply for year end planning services.

EXPENSE TRACKING REMINDER

You may have heard about recent increases in IRS funding. With that, there will undoubtedly come more audits in the next few years. We just want to remind you that you should be keeping either paper or (even better) digital copies of actual receipts. Even if you use software or a business bank account to track/summarize expenses, you still need actual copies of receipts if you are audited; bank statements and credit card statements will not be enough documentation in an audit. Fox Tax does not need to see all the receipts each year, but you should be keeping them just in case!

Use QuickBooks Online?
Download the app here and use it to take pictures of receipts (and track mileage). You can also set up an email address to forward all receipts to QBO. We love this feature: you just click "Compose Email" in your phone, click the paperclip to attach image, take a photo of the receipt and hit send. That gives you a receipt searchable in email AND in QBO. If you're considering using Quickbooks for 2023, contact us about potential discount pricing via their accountant wholesale option (only available for new subscribers).

Other Apps and Expense Trackers
A free option we recently found is Stride. Other than trying to sell you insurance, it appears to be free to use and lets you take pics of receipts and export reports. Another free option would be Wave
HAVE EMPLOYEES OR WAGES FROM S-CORP?

Please let us know if you need help making any of the following adjustments in payroll:
  1. S Corp Owner Health Insurance: Email your accountant with your total year cost of any owner's health insurance for 2022 and they can help add that figure to your payroll correctly. Or if we have access to your bookkeeping, email us once your final December health insurance bill is paid and recorded and we can look up the annual totals.
  2. 401k/Retirement Benefits: Please review totals in payroll for each employee and compare to the totals for each employee listed with your Retirement Plan Provider. Let us know if you need help adjusting in payroll (or send additional funds to the Plan Provider if you have underpaid any of the accounts).
  3. HSA and Health Insurance Benefits for Employees: Compare payroll report totals for each employee to reports from the HSA provider to make sure you've accurately funded each employee account. If your health insurance plan year starts January 1st, make sure you've updated the deduction/benefit amounts to reflect any changes in cost for the upcoming year.
It's much easier to fix mistakes now vs. after reports and W2s have been submitted, so please review and let us know if you need any help!
